Partial deafness

Hi,

My 6 year old has just started Yr 2 and we've just found out he's deaf in one ear.
So far school has been pretty vague about if he's intitled to any additional support. He's quite behind so I'm hopeful he will be. Does anyone know how I can find out?
Thanks.

It’s the schools responsibility to flag up whether he needs extra support your probably have to be quite assertive to ensure they do this.

I would also go back to the gp and mention the developmental stuff and that he’s behind at school at see what they suggest. What did they say when they told you he was partially deaf? Were you told a plan?

Who diagnosed the HI? They should be talking to school and giving advice. Has he been referred to the Hearing Impaired service or advisory teacher of HI? If he hasn’t been referred the. School SENCo should do it.

We were just told we would be referred to ENT at Birmingham children's to see if they can find a cause. So we are currently waiting for our appointment.

We've not been referred anywhere yet in terms of school help. I'm not to sure what I'm asking the school to help with.

Thanks for replying x

Have you heard of NDCS charity? They will give you advice on unilateral deafness and school support. My DD has the same hearing issue and the ‘Teacher of the Deaf’ came into primary school each year to ensure that the teacher knew how to support her. It was mainly seating arrangements in our case - always at the front and never with the hearing ear towards the wall. Common sense, but good to point out to teachers. She had various hearing aids and the ToD came in more when she had these to make sure that teachers knew what to do.
