Personally I wouldn't touch EyeQ, especially with another condition but I'm no expert. I know its has Evening Primrose Oil which is a problem with epilepsy so not necessarily directly a problem for you. For all I know, maybe EPO would be good for asthma? I'm scared of the stuff though since seeing a child with autism go right of the rails on it. Many other MNers know more than me so you'll get more answers soon. I know everyone was talking about using Eskimo oil recenlty.

Gloworm is prob the best person to ask - she has been massively helpful in the past. Not sure she often looks on the SN board though so I would post something in Health.

i am glad you have asked this, not that i know the answer but my son has started on eye-q capsules and he has asthma but not very often he only needs medication in the winter but i hadnt thought about if there was a problem with eye- q, i hope someone will have the answer for you soon.

I have put a thread in Health section as well

I don't know how to do a link between the two sections

All 3 of my kids have taken EYE-Q for over a year now. The improvement has been immense. My two girls are completely healthy - and their schoolwork has come on in leaps and bounds - youngest daughter who was bottom of class in reading - has now overtaken the top reader! And at 6 - has a reading age of 7.5.
My DS has multiple problems - including asthma and dyspraxia. his speech has improved HUGELY over the last year - and it hasn't had any adverse affect on him at all. he has heart problems (Including slow heart rate), GERD, Hypermobility etc etc.
Our school SENCO raves about EYE-Q and actively advises the parents of special needs children to take it!! I know many teachers in the school have their kids on it now as well.
I dont think its recommended for children taking Ritalin.
All the info is on their site: Equazen

Tried to give to DS tonight on a spoon and he hated it then we tried to mix in his milk but it seperated and so we are now not sure what to do. What tips do you have for mixing it so they don't notice.

It is the vanilla liquid. I read that mix it with tuna sandwich but he had marmite. He does like tuna so that is ok on those days.

Obviously when he has cooked tea it will work we can mix it in.

I think this senco should be cautious about recommending EyeQ as opposed to just recommending fish oils. It definitely is not to be taken by anyone on epilepsy drugs (so she should check before saying it) and I think makes children with autism very stimmy, lots of people have reported this. There's no reason to use EyeQ over other brands of fish oil, lots of threads about others.

tamum · 22/09/2004 21:18

It's not answering the question, but there have been quite a few reputable studies showing an beneficial effect of fish oils on asthma. I can't really imagine that everyone on the trials would have been without conventional medication whilst on the trial, so my guess is it would be alright (bearing in mind Davros's caution about brands). Also, as Twiglett says, the asthma drugs are not really systemic.

My ds 4 is takingf Eye q micro tiny capsules, we mix them with a spoonful of jam and he takes them fine. Tried the liquid and he was having none of it. He has been on it for about 6 months now and I cant say ive noticed a change. We put him on it because his nursery suspect dyspraxia. If we decide to stop it is it ok to just stop I wonder. Im worried now, I didnt realise there was a downside to it.

KangaMummy · 22/09/2004 22:07

I am totally confused now do we give it or throw it away?

my ds has been having it since start of the year. it was the first thing we tried to give him on a spoon - used to syringe for medication. took it off spoon ok. know of a friend whose ds having epiliepsy medication and their constulant said it would be ok to give to him. we bribe our ds by saying "if you eat your oil you can have a yoghurt" (or whatever ois thier fave)! ds now tells us that !!!
but we started it at a time when a few other things were happening so hard to tell if it on its own has improved his 'development' etc. i do think it has done at least some good for him, and would recommend it.

heartinthecountry · 22/09/2004 22:29

kangamummy as davros said there are quite a few other threads that go into probs people have had with EyeQ and lots of tips on how people administer. I would do a search.

On the whole I would say do give a fish oil but look into whether EyeQ is the best one for your ds. AFAIK all the fish oil products have different levels of EPA and DHA plus various other extras.
