DS has not long been DX with ASD, I spoke with his peadiatrician(sp) yesterday, she says although ds clearly has AS, he has been DX with ASD, because he has a severe language disorder too, ASD is the best DX for him as he will get the extra support he needs, AS could'nt be DX because the main trait is they are normally very bright, but because of ds language disorder he struggles to understand, there fore he comes out just below average, though non verbal skills he comes out way above average, he attends the language unit everyday at school, but what can I do to help? he is 6.6, and his language and understanding are that of a typical 5.5 year old.

te ~ My dd had a severe language disorder at 3 and now at the nearly age of 8 she is in the normal range and above average in some areas.
With my dd it wasn't anything we did at home. I think between the age of 7 and 8 she has matured a lot and with the input of the language unit and general maturing it has helped her. We have also made sure that she does out of school activites and general mixing to help improve her language skills.
There is a site called Black sheep that helps with understanding and the social use of language. I am sorry but I have searched and can't find it. maybe Moondog will know the address.
Good luck

I thought absence of a language delay was a main criteria for AS / ASD distinctions? Therefore your ds would be ASD, just milder? At least that's what Paed said to us (DS3 has a severe langauage disorder, may be dx with asd, ds1 has HFA)

Peachy apparently under Gilbergg (or Gilbert? not sure lol) you can have AS with a language delay.

Yes in effect it is a multiple DX, he has AS witha language disorder.

paeds all seem to work to different criteria don't they?

DS1 (AS / HFA) DOES have SPD, but apaprently the sort of severe language delay ds3 has (only been verbalising 6 months and he's 4) means AS is not diagnosable

They do vary so much though, paeds
