Hi feeling really nervous my DS (3 ish) has an assessment in the house tomorrow. Trying to get my head around that maybe there are issues that need to be investigated. Did not realise before DOH! Now not sure if anything to realise or not. Been seeing SALT who passed on to Paed.

Normal to be scared and unsure,so don't give yourself a hard time.

Thousands of children of this age are picked up for further attantion in the standard screening tests used by HVs for example.
Most of them are actually doing fine but the health professionals who referred them on are just doing their job.

I am a salt and have had hundreds of children passed onto me (or have passed onto someone else) in this manner.

For most kids, there is nothing to lose. They either don't need further attention,or if they do,they have been picked up early.

Hope everything goes ok.Is the paed. coming to the house? Skilled personnel will keep it low key and relaxed and answer your questions.

Good luck

spacegirl · 29/07/2007 20:37

Moondog thanks for your support. The same paed is coming to the house that we saw a few weeks ago.

Do they use it to point towards other things that might be wrong. The internet has scared me a bit. Will they let me know what they are looking for? Sorry for all the questions. Is this the right topic to post my questions?

No this topic is just fine.
Jot down any questions you may have (and answers as it can be difficult to remember)
tay away from the Internet for now.Too scarey.Apart from MN that is which is terrific.

Hi Spacegirl, just wanting to welcome you to the SN board. I am still awaiting assessment for my DS, who is 3.4, has very delayed speech and understanding, so can't really help out on likely procedures etc.

TotalChaos · 29/07/2007 21:46

(the MNetter formerly known as MTS!)

spacegirl · 29/07/2007 22:32

Ta for the welcome both.

I think my DS is in a similar position to yours TotalC he is about the same age, was 3 in April.

I will let you know how it goes tomorrow. Maybe I will know more about what they are looking at. Thx heaps. I better go to bed now with my butterfly tummy.

All the best for tomorrow. My experience of home visits/ assessments were positive, more a case of a chat while my little one was observed. (didn't stop me frantically tidying the house and worrying before hand!)

let us know how is goes.

moondog · 29/07/2007 23:13

I'd hate to think anyone tidied the house before I came to visit.
Please don't bother.

tibni · 29/07/2007 23:39

I know there is no need to and I did get better after multiple portage / SaLT etc visits!

I now do voluntary work supporting parents through the SEN system and would hate to think a parent took time out to prepare for my visit!

I have to confess after the birth of my first child and before the health visitor made her first call I rushed round fitting smoke alarms! Having my son (severe ASD) I have changed and surprisingly am more chilled! Its how we function!

spacegirl · 30/07/2007 07:49

Ok to day is the day, 2.00 to be precise. Tibini can relate I know you don't have to but I will be cleaning the house (at least the visible parts) just to make myself busy before i drop DS1 and DD around at a friends.

Feel sick about later.

At least I have three distractions. I can't believe they all get up so early. Don't they know it is the holidays!

Relaaaaaaaaax
Remind yourself that the person you are seeing wants to help you!
Have you made that list of questions and/or got a notebook and pen handy?

Let us now how you get on.

Troutpout · 30/07/2007 18:44

hope it went ok

tibni · 30/07/2007 18:46

Hope your meeting went ok spacegirl.

DS2 had his Ruth G today. Thought he wasn't going to do it at first as he wanted his fave dvds on. He did manage it and it wasn't scary. In fact I was suprised at how good he was at puzzles he only does what he wants normally so i didn't know. He is behind on speech and communicaton but knew he was anyway.

He said that it is possible that he has ASD but that speech delay etc can look like it. I just feel a bit gutted but I know I love him so much I am in limbo as I don't know anymore about how to help him or to deal with some senses issues he has. He was very vague as to the next steps and timescales. He did think that 1 to 1 in nursery would be required. I am so confused as what to do. I have been warned that this paed is not very active at getting stuff done. What do I do. I just want to do the right thing and I am scared he will get lost in the nursery system. How is autism diagnosed?

Was thinking of you today SG,so glad it wasn't too scary.
ASD diagnosis depends on area to area.
There is lots you can do to help and loads of well informed people here.I suggest you start a new thread asking. The title of this one is a bit vague.

spacegirl · 30/07/2007 19:25

thanks moondog wouldn't have realised as I am new to this! Really appreciate your support. Have swapped info to a new thread.
