My pre-schooler is being assessed for developmental delays/SEN.
I'm going for a feedback meeting next week - what should I expect?

  • what should I ask?

Should I ask about EHCP? Mainstream v special schools?

Assessed where ?
Do you mean at either the CDC (Child Development Centre) , or CAMHS (depending where you are in the country), for a medical diagnosis, or do you mean someone is coming in to Nursery to offer staff some support there ?

As my answer will be different.

Someone is going into nursery to assess.

These people are the gateway to the EHCP process (if appropriate) and I want to know what their thoughts are on his progress, etc

Although from the brief conversations I've had with them I'm not convinced they've really got the measure of him tbh.

So it is someone like an Area SENCo or Inclusion Officer?

They will look at developmental profiles the Nursery have filled in. They will observe your ds and will talk to staff.
Then, it will depend on what the Nursery have done so far.
They might offer advice on strategies.
They might support your Nursery to start putting paperwork in place, to start gaining evidence.
Or, if your Nursery already has all this, then they might advise referrals for support from Health colleagues. (That could happen even if your Nursery hasn't done this yet).
They will probably offer an opinion on whether your child's needs meet the criteria to request an assessment for an EHCP. Again, the process for this is different in different parts of the country.

How old is he / when is he due to start Reception ?

Yes the local authority SEN assessment.
We have another year before school, nursery have been on the ball & already been filling out development plans etc.
Already under SALT, paediatrician etc

Okay, so, in my authority, if they feel the need is such that they would be likely to get an EHCP, then they would refer to EPS (Educational Psychology Service). However, the process is different in every LA. I know that doesn't happen in any of the LAs that border with our LA.
Some authorities start the ECHAR (EHC Assessment Request) without EPs being involved). Some don't start it at all, pre-school.
We are talking quite a big if, though, in terms of the EHCAR.
