10.5 month old hands in fists

Hi,
I’m worried about my ds who’s 10.5 months old.
I can’t believe I’ve never realised but he still holds his hands in fists when not playing.
I have concerns he has asd so been worrying about that for past few months and we’re currently doing pivotal response therapy with him.
It was only when I started to notice he doesn’t have a pincer grip yet I thought it was odd.....
He can pick up objects, bang together, wave (with unclenches fists), clap sporadically (both very new gestures!) he does also sometimes have his hands quite loose just as anyone would.
He can feed himself with a spoon in either hand although does tend to favour his right more. Drinks fine from sippy cup.
He learnt to roll at 4 months, sit at 6, he has crawled since 9.5 months in the ‘proper’ way. He can pull himself up and takes steps if we hold his hands.
He just zero pincer grip and his hands are in fists quite often.
I feel terrible it’s taken me so long to notice. I have a docs appointment on Friday but I’m so frightened there is something very wrong with him....
Has anyone ever been through the same?
Thanks

Oh I’ll just add he is also starting to point to request so can isolate his pointer fingers easily and when he reaches he can reach with whole hand open.

Are there any other traits that make you think ASD? For instance:

  • does he respond when you call his name?
  • does he have ‘joint attention’? I.e. does he look or point at things and then look to you to gauge your reaction to it?
  • does he have good eye contact with you and others?
  • does he babble and communicate with you?

Hi,
He wasn’t responding to his name very well although that has got better over the last few weeks.
Joint attention is hit and miss, he definitely isn’t yet pointing at things and looking back at us. Just pointing to request at the moment.
Again his eye contact is hit and miss, I can sing to him on my lap and he won’t look at me, he does focus more on toys than people when he’s playing.
He is starting to gesture more, gesture to continue playing games, pointing at little bit.
He is definitely making progress with the play therapy.
I guess my real concern is the clenched fists, I’m not sure if this is a symptom of autism, everywhere I look dr google mentions cerebral palsy....

As far as I know it isn’t part of the triad of impairments for ASD. Hopefully your GP can help.

Thanks.
I will see what they say on Friday

Hi any updates @Chickenandegg8 came across your thread following my little niggles about my 10 month old.

Hi, he’s really good thanks. His joint attention improved massively once he was over 1.
His fine motor is a bit behind though, he started school in September and the teacher mentioned it to us.
The play therapy definitely helped though. I remember the childminder saying to me when he was about 15 months old he was like a different child than when he first started at 10 months.
She did say there was something about him that she couldn’t put her finger on when he first started but he’d changed so much in 5 months.
He's completely fine now though, absolute monkey and definitely not asd!
