DS is a July baby with a 15-18 month speech and language (comprehension) delay, ADOS / MDA has ruled our autism, I am wondering whether to delay reception and would love to hear any thoughts.

I did and am pleased we did as there is no way that ds (severe s&l disorder) could have coped. I made the mistake of not applying for an EHCP for when he did start reception though.

I’m a SALT and my advice would definitely be to defer if you’re able Flowers

I deferred my son who is globally developmentally delayed. It was definitely the right decision for us. I second applying for an EHCP sooner rather than later.

I am in the same boat. DD is a July birthday too and due to start in September. My eldest, her brother has autism but she does not yet she has a significant speech delay, gdd, hypermolity and low muscle tone. What she does say, isn’t very clear. I am worried sick about her starting school.

I really want to keep her back a year yet there’s the downside she wouldn’t be glad up with the children she is in Pre-school with.

Every professional she sees seem to be against the idea which is really getting me down. I can see why schools don’t like parents making this decision but only the parents know what’s best.

At the minute I am in talks with the school about part time admission so she wouldn’t have to go full days. If this isn’t allowed then I will try to defer her entry for another year.

She has just seen an educational psychologist who is going to start the ball rolling to get an EHCP. I am hoping this will be accepted (previously been told she doesn’t the criteria) so she will get the support.

Good luck with it all!

I didn’t word that very well. She is not to believed to be on the spectrum like her brother, yet has some delays that will hold her back in school.

I was thinking of this maybe for the future. My DS is late summer baby, with a speech delay. The thing is I don't get how having that extra year in preschool, then going into year 1 helps them? Isn't reception play based, so more like full time preschool ?

Do schools actually let them start in reception after deferring ?

Snoringdoggo if a parent opts to delay school start then the admissions authority is meant to decide if it's in the child's best interests to start school in Reception or Year One. Some authorities can be difficult about this but others like mine are very straightforward - so my son started Reception aged 5 years two months.

It might be worth checking out the Flexible Admissions for Summerborns group.
