Can school do this?

DS is 7, has ADHD, trying meds but no luck yet but it's early days. He's on 1:1 with breaks outside the classroom and making more progress than he was. He's in Y2.
He has always been aggressive at home and was at nursery but he managed Reception well so school have kept saying he's fine (plus, nursery didn't pass on their concerns though we thought they had Hmm)
He's had a couple of playground refusals to come home this week, frankly normal for us (lying down and/or hitting me). He's run into the park on the way home in the past, and run off and hid, just not in the playground or else school haven't spotted it!
School say he's pushed staff a couple of times now too.
They also say that in KS2 they cannot provide an out of classroom area "so he must be able to be in the classroom".
They are very proactive in general and after school on Friday they were emailIng for a referral (does this mean help in his current school? Or exclusion??) to the local short stay school (primary aged).
It's very close to us and right age range obviously so if it's going to help him, bring it on, but can they a) suddenly decide he's going there? We aren't sure what they are thinking and b) say they can't meet his needs in Y3 due to needing to go out of the classroom??
Also if they are saying they are concerned he's not safe going to and from school - what can they do about it? And how will moving him help (both schools are walking distance, we always manage to get there in the morning no problems except moaning! and we pick him up from after school clubs half the time anyway).
He's awaiting an EHCP and we have a TAF which we will have a meeting for shortly.

Well today they sent me a list of things he'd been doing that he shouldn't have been but it is NOT an ABC.
He had a bad afternoon today (he's had to come off his ADHD meds which school think are making him worse but now they say why didn't we tell them; DH thought he had but he clearly forgot).
Aaargh.

Now apparently it's URGENT we see them tomorrow.
As we both have work, DH has said he'll manage a phone call. But I don't know what they expect to happen in the next few days when we have no meds at the moment.

That does not sound promising.

Might be worth checking some links on other threads here re illegal exclusions. I'm sorry I can't be more help.

How are things going, drspouse?

drspouse · 28/03/2019 21:40

Well, despite telling us that school would be doing all they could, the PRU person did find some helpful things to suggest. They all still think he should go though I think. She was in school at the start of the week.
The norm though seems to be for school to say nothing for weeks other than the occasional "he's had a good day" then run around screaming THE SKY IS FALLING. So we're going to bug them more often, and ask for specifics that we can support at home.

Could you ask the school for a communication diary so you are getting daily reports on how his day has been.

Look at the ipsea website and contact sendiass for advice and support. Do not let yourself be pushed into anything you are not comfortable with being in the best interests of your son. Put as much as possible in writing to give you a paper trail and request the school do the same. Check the schools sen policy and see if they are meeting their obligations. Good luck it is a hell of a fight once this starts, we are in weekly 'discussions' with our school but luckily have an amazing new senco which will hopefully make a difference.

We have a communication diary (all the children do). Today I asked how his week had been but though the diary was read (a new reading book noted) I didn't get a reply so I emailed.
The PRU adviser was really surprised based on what we'd been told that he is anywhere near exclusion and so is an adviser from a charity I've spoken to (small local charity). We may be able to get her in to advise.
Got his report today, it's based on LEA's own SEN targets rather than NC targets. It says he's made no progress at all in reading yet I've seen him come on really well in the reading we do at home so I shall be following that up too.
