Speech and language schools

Can anyone recommend any good SLCN schools in the north? They all seem to based in the south!
We recently went for an ICAN assessment who recommended a specialist school rather than a mainstream unit! Xx

What age group are you looking for op? Does your child have an ehcp?

He's 4.5 years old. We've deferred his school start until September 2019.

We were refused an EHCP but I think we were very naive re the approach. This time round we have written confirmation from his speech therapist and consultant that they feel he needs a EHCP. Also going to use the ICAN assessment report to support the application. Xxx

If you are looking at specialist provision you will need an ehcp. If your looking for a specific speech and language school they are commonly independent schools which complicates things further as they are far far more expense than state special or mainstream schools. A charity such as sossen or ipsea might be able to offer some advice regarding gaining an ehcp for your son. If you are successful before accepting the draft i would allow someone who fully understands the document such as sossen/ipsea have a look at it first (I've learnt that the hard way unfortunately).

As for schools in the north im not aware of any specific speech and language schools but i am aware of a number of schools who have excellent provision and specialist classes. Some of these require an autism diagnosis though. What borough are you in?

Thank you @spader1987 ! We live in Leeds but are willing to move for the right school. I have seen one in Wakefield but that's it.....

Senidas which is our local advice for SEN has offered to review the EHCP before we submit.

I'm going to visit a language resource in mainstream school in Leeds on Tuesday as well.

I am aware of dawn House but this is in nottingham. There are a couple of very good schools in the North west that have excellent communication units but an autism diagnosis is required. Im obviously not aware of your sons difficulties but if these could help let me know.

Section F of an ehcp which sets out provision is very important. This has to be specific and quantifiable, you don't want to have issues later on because your provision isn't specific enough. Don't be afraid of writing all over an ehcp draft if you get one, it is a very important document and getting it right initially will save you from torture later on!

You will find it far easier getting accepted to a mainstream unit or state ss at this age. Independent schools are very very difficult especially at 5. Not impossible but very difficult and would almost certainly require you going to tribunal.
