School want to start a diagnosis but I’m not sure of what?

I don’t know if anyone can help but I had my DS’s parents evening last night and they have discussed about putting my son forward for a diagnosis of “complex communication needs” but what does this mean? They have had a senco in to observe him for the day and I’m still waiting for that report but just wondering if anyone knew what they were hinting towards?

Does this mean he is on the autistic spectrum?

To be honest it has come as a complete shock as he just seems like any 5 year old little boy to me - yes he is a bit shy but I don’t think he has SEN. At least I didn’t .

Thanks in advance

From what they describe (not wanting to put coat on, noise avoidance, sensory seeking) it sounds more of a Sensory issue.

Both my boys have sensory issues, but nothing that is too debilitating, not ASD. My DS1 (age 7) with dyspraxia also has Auditory Processing Disorder, he is sociable and kind but will spend a lot of time at school on his own at play time, because he's not keen on noisy environments and he likes daydreaming. No one ever raised it as an issue, and it's actually quite characteristic of DCD and SPD.

You mentioned he started speaking early. Is he noticeably ahead of his peers? Maybe his peers are not stimulating enough, hence talks to adults and he finds school confusing?

If you want to do a simple NHS diagnosis, you could check him for Auditory Processing Disorder through GP referral.

It might be a reason why he might act a bit withdrawn at school.

I know this is an old thread (it’s my old thread ) but after this assessment he was found to not have any SEN and Nothing came of it and i haven’t heard any more about it since .

That is until now when we recently applied to a private school for him and when the school asked his current school for a reference it stated he was on the SEN register!

I literally found this out through the new headmaster (it doesn’t affect his application) but I was a bit miffed that they had never said anything about it to me! I emailed the current school a couple of weeks ago for clarification and had an email back from the Senco saying they would try and find out from his teachers if he had any additional needs but it just all seems a bit bizarre! Surely I should be aware if he is on the SEN register and having additional support?

Has anyone had this kind of situation happen before? Should I have been notified? Nothing has been said since his assessment in reception and he is end of year 2 now .

Thanks if you got this far

Yes of course you should. You certainly shouldn't be hearing about it from the HT of another school!

That was my thoughts exactly @Ellie56 . It’s just completely bizarre!
They aren’t really being straight with me about what’s going on. And I’m struggling to get more information out of them about the situation .

Surely if a child is on the SEN register then the parent would have regular updates? Nothing has ever been mentioned not even during parents evening!
