Dear mums

Last year we had to go abroad for a holiday, dear son who is autustic didnt enjoy neither the travel nor the trip...he was stressed all the time...I ended up thinking that it was not fair to cause him all this stress...So over Christmas we did nit go aboard but somewhere within thr country...

However, he was still.stressed and didnt like the change and was upset crying tantrum mist of the time if not all...

Now, i cant think of a holiday anymire if this would cause my son a distress...

How Do you go about this kind of sutuation when you change the place...How do you settle your ASD son...?

Please advise...Thanks

Hey batna,

We have tried abroad holidays with ds when he was younger, mainly ended in disaster. The only holiday he has enjoyed was to the thomas centre in Lincolnshire. It is specifically designed for those with additional needs, it is expensive though. We found it was worth every penny as ds loved it. Might he worth a google.

We have found this difficult in the past. We still go on holiday but tend to take our own car, for example going on the ferry to France, or go to fun places in the U.K. like Center Parcs. We take tons of familiar stuff which helps. Our son prefers holiday cabins or mobile homes to hotels or guest houses, I think it's because there's less clutter. He also prefers a more outdoors type of holiday. I do picture information cards for aspects of the holiday so he can see where he will sleep etc. He's non verbal and has low understanding but it seems to make him more settled x
