Part time special school, part time home ed?

Has anyone done this? DS2 is making such great progress on his ABA/VB home programme that I'm wondering about only sending him to school part time in September. The Head is receptive to the idea; the LEA much more cautious but didn't rule it out. I need pros and cons before making a firm decision (and even then I have to get it past the Complex cases Panel. Before end of July. Eek! )

There's stuff about it in that "home educating our autistic spectrum children paths are made for walking" book.

Why do you need complex cases to OK it? Surely ds2 doesn;t have to be full time until the term after he's 5 anyway, so if the school agree you can flexi. Theoretically....

BTW lots of children in reception are part time in ds1's school....

Ah that's worth knowing about DS1's school... I thought they had to go from the term they were 5 (which is autumn for H) not the term after. That would give us a term to play with then...

While you're on here Gess - do you know approx how much actual teaching of cognitive stuff DS1 gets at school - either 1:1 or in a group? Tis one of my concerns...
And anyone else whose DC is at special school too?

Hmm depends what you mean by cognitive stuff, as its built into other lessons. So counting is taught at snack time say, etc, etc.

I suppose I mean anything other than self-help stuff - language, numbers, matching, sorting etc. Things we do from ABLSS.

At ds1's school language is worked on all the time. Individually though, something different for each child. DS1 at the moment seems to be work on signing, so say he makes a PECS request he's then asked to supply the sign as well (often).

colours/numbers/literacy etc built into the lessons, but will vary depending on the child.
