My son is 12 and in year 8 in secondary school. He has been acting up in school since probably juniors. When he finds the work difficult he will act up to deflect the fact that he is struggling so he doesn't ask for help because he thinks people will think he is stupid.
His junior school picked up on this and he was given a lot of extra support to achieve the sats results he did. In yr 7 his science teacher picked up that his test results didn't match his ability in class and flagged up that he may have a problem with how he processes information. I was in contact with senco at his school but after emailing all his teachers they decided he didn't need a test for dyslexia. As only 3 of his teachers thought this could be a possibility. He has now been given a time out card so if he gets frustrated he can leave the lesson. While this is helpful in the short term no one seems to be addressing why he gets so frustrated. He is on progress warnings for a few of his lessons.
I don't think he has dyslexia but has problems with processing information. I saw a post on Mumsnet a while ago where someone suggested another parent get their child tested for something like this. When I googled it. It describes my son. I can't remember what it was callled. I'm trying to find it so I can go to school and say this is what I think he has and this is where the problem lies.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You need to get an assessment with an Educational Psychologist and they will look at all areas of learning, pinpoint any issues and produce a profile of strengths and weaknessses and a list of ideas for both home and school to support him. As he’s in Yr8 I would not waste any time getting a referral - you can do this through school, but it could take months to be seen further wasting time and adding to issues/ frustration. If you can pay privately you can probably be seen within the next couple of weeks, but it is expensive.
