Additional bedroom for child with ASC/Autism

Hi, has anyone been successful in obtaining an addition bedroom for a child with ASC?

Our local authority refuse this even with HRC showing there are night time needs.

Are some councils/housing associations better at acknowledging this need than others?

Would be great to know peoples experiences and which LA or HA they belong to.

Many thanks and Happy Christmas.

In theory councils all work to the same criteria and it’s a medical panel decision: even if your own medical evidence supports it, it doesn’t mean it will be agreed. You may find housing associations or Trust more lenient and flexible than local authority.

Have you appealed? If you have and it’s not been successful (and have you have supporting medical evidence that it’s required) it might be worth talking to your local Councillor or MP. They should offer surgeries where you can talk to them, or you can email an MPs caseworker directly and they can act on your behalf.

Good luck x

Thank you for you response. We live in Islington which is an area of extreme pressure on social housing and also a large number of children diagnosed with ASC. Even with medical evidence and support from an OT regarding the need for an additional bedroom it is almost impossible to have one granted through the LA. We are considering exchanging with a HA tenant (like for like) in the hope with the correct supporting evidence we can move to a larger property through their internal transfer scheme. Had hoped we could find out which HA supported families such as ours.

You are not likely to have much luck here .reason being there is really a shortage of housing. If I charged a penny for the numbers of times I had written a letter to the authorities with regards to housing on behalf of a parent .I would hav beeen fairly rich by now the most you’ll b e offered is a suggestion to move out from London
Some families have and the benefits to them has been enormous ie massive space, gardens etc.
