Feeling frustrated and sad after Paed trip today [sad]

Took ds3 to his long awaited PAed appt today, we were due a dx.

Unfortunately Paed has decided not to attempt a DX for two years as she is now against labelling young children! there is also a tiny chance that it could be a speech disorder (anyone know about them? I know nothing) that is causing the ASD symptoms. Even though he does DX on cars etc

So he now cannot access the SN units, only SALT unit BUT hneither they nor MS will take a child who is in nappies- nd because he cant tell if he is wet, he will be for the while. We've pulle dhim until Easter, and are discussing with head on Friday. SENCO has tols us LEA won't be awarding fullt iem 1 - 1 though as they dont do that in MS here, he would need to be in SN unit.

'Cept he can't access a SN unit........

Now, have been and lost with ds1, but at elast then I could run to NAS ofor support- here, without a dx, where do we go?

Paeds besta dvie to speed it up? Intensive 1 - 1 with priavte SALT

yes inddedy a student loan covers that

Soory know I'm being a miserable old shite but just getting nowhere, he's 4 in a few weeks and has had nothing- zilch. Fallen through too many agps (Paed who wouldnt refer, SALT post was vacnat etc etc) and now this

HEEEELP

just spoke to lea

the thing about policy for nursery was a direct lie from BAt however its now too late and the nursery is full

Is aid well the school cant take children in nappes, the SN SALt school cant either and there are no otions open to su bar those- she said well he should be dry before nursery SN is irrlevant and we don't have to give him a school palce til next year and the statement wont be through until after the term starts so hard luck

What now?

I'm really shocked, two of my children got unit places before they had a dx.
Have you called the schools to check what is needed for him to get a place at the units? Just in case the LEA is fobbing you off.

My yougest ds has langauge disorder he also many asd traits and is under going assessment but I would say his primary need at the moment is the language disorder therefore he is better suited to SALT unit.

peachy, check this out because i was told by the *headteacher" of the nursery that dd attends that she wouldnt qualify for a SLT placement in september as she doesnt have a dx and her speech problems are mild.
She was wrong and i went over her head and got the Ed Psych involved myself.
They will say anything to fob you off.
DD probably wont have a confirmed dx by the time she starts reception in sep 2008 but no doubt ill be told more lies about how she wont get a place in the SLT unit in primary school.

ThePaediatrician said he should be in the SALT unit- will be speaking to SALT tomorrow.

Apparenlty the thing seems to be that schools etc want him there this coming term, in line with his age group- they don't like kids to skip a year. LEA don't legally have to find him a place until he is 5 however, by which time he will have a statement, and could be dry.

So there is a conflict of interests there isn't there?

Actually what I found [shocl] was the LEA lady telling me she held me responsible for him not being dry!!!!!! rude woman.

well you could complain about that.; her comments were completely inappropriate. Very few of the children at ds1's school (which goes up to 19) are toilet trained. Suggest that she goes to the local SLD/PMLD school and tellls the parents its their fault their children aren;t toilet rained if SN have nothing to do with toilet training. I'd send her the Sure Start info at the same time re nappies and the DDA.

Ah apparently she isn't allowed to take SN into acocunt until FATER the staement is issued you see, until then he is not classed as Sna s far as they are concerned

But then it took 10 minutes shouting to be allowed to speak to someone- much huffing about how the LEA doens't take calls fromparents atm - and much unreasonable huffing from me about who they think pays the taxes that employ them

Have left a message with local helpline about this- see if they get abck to me. tried IPSEA a few times but couldn't get through , I did have a letter from thems aying theya re fundraising for a new telephone exchange system.

Aother busy day then.......

SALT_ DS3's understanding is at 1 wod level with 2 word level intermitently . but at least we will have an answer. And they will be doing further work and therapy which is good- there was a chance they would put us on another list.

School (the scary bit)- Head is going to ask Governors if they can retain DS3's space whilst he has an extra term at home, then P/T for a term before FT at Easter. Actually, they amde it clear they expect DS3 to end up in SN education but until the LEA issue the draft statement thet cant satte that. Indeed, the draft will almost certainly be challenged as the SALT appointment was after submission date, and SALT needs wont be in this statement

Moving forwards though- YAY

good you have finally managed to see the SALT, and the school stuff seems to be falling into place but obviously a lot for you to take in re:receptive language.
