My Ds is 2 and has suspected ASD. When we saw the paediatrician the only referrals she made was for SALT, blood tests and hearing tests. I never really understood what Occupational Therapy was I thought it was just for children who have less ability in self help skills but after speaking to BIBIC who said I should see one- I realised that OT is something that maybe we should have been referred for. I read that they can help him with socialisation and play skills and also things like hand flapping.

My son has very little social skills and doesn't play appropriately with his toys doesn't draw or paint or even scribble. (he did a little scribble with encouragement yesterday) He eats crayons. Should I have been offered OT. Don't want to sound greedy but want to make sure he is getting all the help he needs.

You aren't greedy at all, and I too wasn't referred for an OT when this is the area my DS most needs help in IMO. Apparently they are like gold dust in my county and I had to make the referral myself and waited for over a year for one to be assigned. Even now her visits are rare, although she has been prompt at helping with things like equipment, seating, etc.

My experience is the same as yours Fio. Her visits are fleeting, the help limited to handouts and the odd phone call.

I'd agree with Fio , our experience of OT was more about improving practical skills and motor coordination than socialisation and eliminating traits like hand flapping. We had to wait 18 months for just 4 one hour sessions and a list of home exercises for our 9yr old. The OT let slip that they try to focus longer term on children with medical need rather than those with a functional need due to limited resources. 2 is still young to expect some of those skills you mention in a NT child anyway. SALT is often play based although OT may yet be applicable later.

I was talking to a mate last night. Her dd had a dx of dyspraxia (and OT can be so important for these kids). They had a 3 year wait!

we had a long wait for OT initially but they have proved to be the professionals to offer the most help & support for ds2.
He had regular reviews & assessments to start with & He has just finished 5 months of weekly OT group sessions & they have helped with confidence, social skills etc as well as fine motor skills.
We are just waiting for the reports to give to ds2's school ready fro Sept start & they are going in to advise/help school get to know him.
I would say push & make a nuisance of yourself until your ds has good quality input from OT.
