So my 16 mo is on a wait list to receive speech and occupational therapy. They believe he may have Sensory Processing Disorder so I will speak with the doctor to see.what he thinks. He passes in the white for all areas of ASQ except black for communication. What has me most worried is his lack or receptive language. A little about lo:
-He does not follow commands like sit down or bring Mom a book, etc. He claps if we say clap or sing a clapping song. He gives but only if I put my hand out.
-He does not understand words. He looks fir the dog if we ask where is the puppy. Other than that he does not look at an object or person if you ask, nit even Mom or Dad.
-No words.
-No mimicking sounds. He has copied animals sounds before but nothing consistant at all.
-Lack of gestures. He reaches, gives, shows, claps, will bring me something if he needs help. He points out of interest but does not use eye contact and notbto request. He sometimes waves back but does not inititiate it. He hugs and kisses but doea not blow kisses. He does not use sign language even though I have been using it lots with him.
Anyone have lo like this eventually catch up? I am worried he may never understand us or talk.

It sounds like he is engaging with you in some ways: showing you things, hugs and kisses, clapping with you etc. are all types of communication so that's a very good start. And he does understand some things so it shows he can in principle understand.

Have you tried PECS or some other kind of picture-based system (I think there are some for iPad too)? I know all kids are different in what communication styles work best and some kids just can't speak and aren't interested in signing, but may find the pictures more engaging: worth a try?

Have they told you how long you have to wait for the SLT/OT appointments? It may be worth seeing a private SLT if you can and if it's a long wait otherwise, even if just one or two sessions to give you some advice so you can start working on communication skills yourselves.

So we had a private session booked for end of the month and they just said the other ST can visit in a weeks time. So depending on how often they will be able to see us I will either keep or cancel private ST. Right now I am holding things up near my face so he has to look at what I say, simple words, encouraging sign language and choices to try to make him point labeling and trying to get him to copy gestures. So we will see what ST will add to this all. Just so eager for him to communicate. I know it may be a long road ahead.

I will have to try the computer program. It may be something useful.
