part time school/p/t home ed

Has anyone ever done part time school, part time home ed with their child? DS2 is due to go to special school in Sept but is getting on very well with his ABA/VB home programme. I'm quite keen to explore the option of half days at school and half days at home doing the programme. Might think about a shadow once our tutors are trained up but they're not starting until end of July and none of them are experienced so to go into school in Sept would be too soon I think.

Any thoughts? Have run it past the Head and he certainly wasn't anti. Seemed to think the LEA would be sympathetic too if I made a good enough case.

well it definite exists and people do it (it's called flexi-schooling IIRC), not sure if anyone does it on here, there is a lady on www.badmothersclub.co.uk that does it if that's any help (don't think there are any SN issues involved with this lady, so not sure whether it being a special school would make a difference though)

hello sphil.
there is an article on flexischooling by a family who have successfully done it here;
flexitimeschooling.info/
The Home Education UK website also has an article on it www.home-education.org.uk/articles-flexi-school.htm

There is also a website for families who home educate their children who have Special needs www.he-special.org.uk/index.php. Following the links on that page will take you to a internet support list of parents with loads of experience in this field, and I'm pretty sure I have read of of parents there who flexischool-it would definitely be my first port of call.

Thanks - will look at those links later. In a rush now - v. suspicious that DS2 is about to throw up!

Julie - finally got round to looking at the links (it's been one of those weeks) and they're brilliant. Will be printing bits off and taking them to my meeting with the Head next week.

I'm glad you started this thread sphil, I was wondering about the same thing! Your're lucky that your school is not opposing the idea - my ds will go to a ms school, and while they initally agreed to a "phased entry", it's now starting to sound more like they meant a couple of weeks, not a couple of years...!
Have you got funding for your ABA programme? Our LEA has just refused to put ABA into ds's statement and we are now heading for tribunal.
What I'm wondering now is - if I can get the tribunal to order the LEA to write split provision (ms school / ABA home prog) into the statement, then surely the head of the named school HAS to agree to this? Does anyone know?
(Interesting to read in the links posted that the school still receives full funding for a part-time place - good for the school, I suppose, but not so good for the LEA if they're financing the ABA programme on top!)

Cool, that's really good to hear electra! I think this is the route I will pursue first of all, rather than getting into negotiations with the school at this point. If it's in the statement, then they can't back out of it later on!
