Private health insurance for autism treatments

Hi,

I have a 7 year old son with diagnosis for ASD. I need to decide if I want to get health insurance through my new job for me and family or not. So the question is that, does a comprehensive private health insurance cover the autism related treatments? If not, is it required to cover the children with private health insurance?

Autism is not a disease, there is no treatment or cure, so I'm not sure if it would be included in general health insurance.

If you mean interventions e.g. therapy for the co-morbids like private physio, OT, speech therapy, then you need to ask the insurers directly so their reply is in writing to see exactly what conditions are covered, whether they are covered if the company decides autism is the "cause" of the symptoms or the company decides the conditions are separate from the autism. Just like autistic people, insurance policies are all different.

The Bupa page isn't terribly helpful, it suggests CBT, Physio and OT may be covered www.bupa.co.uk/health-information/brain-nervous-system/autism

Thanks for the info. Almost all of the insurers do not cover pre-existing conditions and as children are born with Autism, it can be considered as pre-existing condition.
I have called Aviva, they don’t cover the treatments.
