ASD and struggling with school work...

Dd is 7 and is struggling academically.
She is anxious about it and almost downing tools and not engaging at times.

In your experience, does one to one t/a support really assist in this area or do some children struggle with having so much attention from t/a? Her
Teacher is great, but we feel too much is put on her and dd’s close friends, to support her in communication, toileting, academically etc.

Will EHCP be way to go. School are great but I feel genuine downing of tools, school work struggles and refusal are possible around the corner. We have some experience of difficulties getting her into school.

Help! 🙈😬

Hi, i had the same problem as you 6 mths ago, my boy was refusing any school homework etc at home. I have put in rewards system for him on a task so he knows where he is with it and when about to finish (he is collecting pics of his favourite characters), what he will get after (usually ipad) - "now and next board" and a general one for good behaviour - stars and at the end of the month he gets sthg what we previously agreed too (we discuss his day every evening snd i choose 3 things/behaviours i liked, i write it down when speaking as he is visual learner). It does work for us, i didnt believe it will but he got there with persistance.

Having one to one can ease the anxiety as the work can be reinforced/ help with communication etc. In my experience securing a EHCP will help out so much as the problems tend to get worse in high school. The EHCP process can be stressful in itself, geting it now would eases the pressure at high school and help with transitioning. We found a parental request was better as we took charge and gave as much information as we could to get a EHCP needs assessment. Your school might be more supportive so depends on your circumstance. Good luck!

For us 1-1 has made a massive difference. We are just appealing to get it written into his ehc plan because their draft was way too wooly.

His 1-1 has been off for a few weeks and that has shown how much he needs someone
