Do your little ones with ASD do this? It seems to be picking up a little, Age 7 - High Functioning Autism.

Yes ds does this all the time. It sounds like he is stimming. We have both vocal and physical stims, lots of them. Ds does it all the time but particulary outside where he feels most uncomfortable.

I’ve really noticed it in shops or cafes - when going to pay. Also in busy crowds. We get lots of looks lol, but I’m ok with it. She seems happy at the time?

Ds has happy stims and agitated stims. His current favourite is tapping his finger on his chin repeatedly. When agitated he'll make a particular noise over and over.
People stare all the time, mostly i ignore. Occasionally I'll educate them if they are making comments as that's not on.
Stims are something they are in control of. Maybe it's her way of dealing with those situations and gives her something she is in control of to concentrate on.

ds2 does this. Not that he goes out in public very often. Mainly a repetitive umming noise which drives his brother to distraction. Most of the time he seems completely unaware he is doing it. Worse when he is anxious & it has increased since he has got older. We try the distract technique to stop him if it is causing a problem to others (mainly as I said his brother).

How old is your DS now? Is he high functioning?

My son is 4 and constantly roars. It's VERY loud and has made other kids cry as it comes from nowhere at times. It's a way to block out sensory overload. His cooing mechanism. We are currently working on ear defenders in busy places...
