I'm lying awake worrying about my son. He's aged 10 and in year 6 (final year of primary for those not in England). Just diagnosed with dyscalculia and dyslexia after a long fight. The school have been good at recognising his issues. However, despite being told he needs a 'targeted intervention plan' for maths, he hasn't got one. The person who confirmed dyscalculia said he doesn't have a sense of number and that he skips numbers when counting to 10 which would explain why he kept getting adding and subtracting wrong. So he needs to go back to basics to work out what he doesn't understand. The schools answer appears to be to give him year 1 work whilst the rest of the class do the year 6 curriculum. As you can imagine sitting there counting pictures of Teddy bears is not doing his self esteem much good.
I am hoping they are going to get someone in to devise a proper plan but if they don't what do I do?
