The Curious Incident of the PageBoy and the Wedding Speech

Ds 3 (likely AS)...was a pageboy...and whilst his uncle was doing his speech about his newly married daughter... he turned to me (and loudly asked)
"why is Uncle X being so horrible about (daughter) Y ????"

Quite something as my 'non-believing-about ds3-being AS-Mum-in-law" heard it too...and i think for once got what i have been trying to tell them....

in this case...the humour and sarcasm of a wedding speech was way lost on him.

(he later told people he was going to the 'year 1 ' party that night...noone had a clue...then for once DH actually tuned in to his thinking and we managed to get out of him that cos the afternoon party was called a reception.... then the second party in the evening MUST be 'yr 1'...as at school!!!!

logic in there somewhere!

I love the 'Year 1' party - how clever!
Hopefully your MIL will have more of an insight into how your DS sees the world, and will be supportive of you all.
Great title,btw.

thanks brothel...love your name too!!!

test will be next time i mention ds3 and ?AS...if MIL bites my head off...or whether she at least listens.

(i have 2 older boys already dx of AS....ds3 is 8...they are 10 and 13)

hi dino- yes our days are full of things like that!

mostly i find it quirky and funny...sometimes its a 'slap round the face' .

at the same wedding for example...he refused to talk to me or Dh - saying he was the pageboy and he 'belonged' to the wedding.

then later on---at about 11pm...he was falling asleep in a chair...went to take him home...he tantrummed...saying the wedding wasn't finished. I pointed out how empty the room was getting...he again told me he was the pageboy...and had to stay till 'the end'...had to get bride and here mum to give him 'permission' to go home !!!!

he really was a star the whole day...but...all these little moments just show how confused he felt

Bless him - the year one party

edam · 12/06/2007 11:49

Oh, bless him, it's hard enough to understand the adult rules for NT kids, let alone when there are SN to grapple with. Good logical deduction on the year one party, he's clearly a clever little boy (not intending to dismiss his needs in any way, just seems like good reasoning).

Sounds like he enjoyed the day, though.

when he was asked last year if he wanted to be a pageboy...i had to warn him it would probably not be like the episode of Little Bill...when little bill is a 'ring bearer'.... which amazed me as he had stopped watching little bill a couple of years before!!!

Sounds like my ds too.
We went to a wedding last year and ds being pretty much non-verbal, was babbling all the way through.
The vicar then said the bit about helping this couple through their marriage, the whole congregation got up and said 'I will'.
Ds then climbs onto the pew, arms raised and shouts' WAIT WAIT, I WILL!'
Clear as a bell. Had the vicar crying with laughter and ds very pleased with himself.

Dino and PC, both your boys sound adorable! Not an SN thing but at my wedding dh's niece, then about 2ish, joined in the vows. When she heard the registrar and dh and I repeating our names, 'I edam x, take thee, edam's dh' she couldn't resist adding 'me Amber Louise', much to everyone's enjoyment. Then she invited everyone back to her house for tea!
