Hi, my dd (4yrs) has sensory issues and impulsive aggressiveness towards other children. She starts ms school in sept and I am worried that she will not be able to cope with lunchtime and will hit out as there are not many teachers per child as in nursery. does anyone else bring their little one home if so was it at your or schools request.

she does not have a statement yet. Never really see senco. I think a break in middle of school day may help her because even nursery is too much for her sometimes.

I'm sure there will be better people posting soon.

In the meantime. i work in a MS secondary school and we have had children go home for lunch if they have real problems over lunch. Sometimes this has been at the parents request, sometimes the school has requested it.

A mate of a mate has a son who had to go home for lunch as the smell of the food overloaded him (even though he took a packed lunch because of food sensitivity issues). He eventually 'grew out of' the sensitivity to the smell and could , after a while, have lunch in school.

I hope it all works out well for your dd

My Ds came home for lunch, for the first two years of school. This was because of his SN (including the issues you mention!). The level of supervision in his school at lunchtime was (and still is) very low, and although it was not my choice ( I wanted support for him!) I went along with it because for him it was very helpful(he eat rested and didnt get damaged!) but did reduce his time to make friends with his classmates. If proper support at school over lunch/ playtime is preferable, I would start pushing for this now! You may need to start gathering evidence for applying for a statement. Perhaps speak to the Senco at nursery. Perhaps see what support is availble before you suggest home lunches - the easy option for the school! Good luck.

Several children from my DC's primary school went home for lunch.
Some had special needs and needed a break; some just went home because that is what they and their parents wanted to do that.

You might also want to consider what impact multiple transitions would have on her. I agree she might need a physical break from school over lunch break, but that needs to be balanced with how she'd cope with going home and then returning. Some children really struggle with that so it's worth thinking about as you could be solving one problem but creating another.
