Hi my son is 5 and has just started in year one. He has a diagnosis of ASD, ADHD and dyspraxia.
He has weak fine motor skills and because of his dyspraxia, he really struggles with writing.
I’m having an issue with his school at the moment and I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar or knows of any article that may support my argument... Which is that I do not want him learning to write on a whiteboard! He is left handed and It is very hard for anyone who is left handed to write on a whiteboard, let alone when you have all the other issues that my son has.
I have watched how he tries to write on a whiteboard and he really struggles as he is trying not to smudge, often changing to his right hand, so he won’t smudge. The school refuse to teach him with paper and say he will have to learn to write on a whiteboard up until year 6.
They are also refusing a whole bunch of other stuff because they are rubbish!
I am in the process of complaining but I am wondering if anyone has had similar issues. Thanks

That is ridiculous!
That would be a really easy adjustment to make, and all schools have to make a 'reasonable adjustment'.
I'm left handed and, as an adult, find it takes a real knack to not smudge out what you are writing on a whiteboard - without his other difficulties.
It really should need you having to find research to prove it though - it is just common sense.
If the school don't have it (common snese) then is there an advisory service in the authority who might intervene ?

Hi, thanks for your comment. They are ridiculous. I have had the Autism Advisory Team email the head about the school failing to provide other adjustments, I think they will mention the whiteboard issue. I spoke with an OT but they can't come in to the school for about 2 months.
I have a meeting tomorrow with the senco, so I will see how this goes, before I officially complain.

I'm left handed and a teacher. It has honestly never occurred to me that this is a problem but now you've mentioned it it is blindingly obvious. Thank you for raising my awareness.
