9yo Son Dyslexic - Do I need an EHCP?

Hello,

Hopping somebody can kindly offer some advice....

My son has just turned 9 years old (an August baby, so youngest in his year) and just about to go in to year 5 this September.

My husband is Dyslexic, and although undiagnosed, my son is showing that he too is Dyslexic.

Although he does receive additional small-group assistance at school, with the TA's, I am wondering if it is the next step to push for an Educational Health Care Plan.

I have met with the SENCO in the last, to be told that it isn't necessary and that DS is receiving additional support anyway.

I am getting to the point where I am thinking about pressing for an EHCP, but want to know your thoughts and experiences.

Where will I get with it, as dyslexia assistance is often seen as to be absorbed by the school?!

We do lots of work with him at home, but I am worried that he is 2 years away from secondary school, and he can not yet read properly / fluently.

Sorry for the ramble, would really appreciate any experiences.

Thank you

Laura

Ehcps are intended to support the children with the highest level of need. If your child is receiving all the required support at SEN Support level he may not require an EHCP.
The school would have to demonstrate that they have employed all the resources available to them and still a higher level of support is required. There would need to be evidence to support this.
On transfer to secondary school the school would be expected to support from their own resources though in secondary it is often delivered differently.
What support do you feel is required that he is not getting now?
You can request an EHCP needs assessment yourself but the school will be asked to submit evidence and impact of what they have already put in place.

Agree with Havasay. Sadly your child really has to prove to be failing and not just a bit behind. For example a Y5 student would still be reception level literacy as a general guide. Always worth requesting an assessment though - nothing ventured nothing gained!

I doubt he would meet the criteria for an EHCP to be honest. EHCP's are intended for children with really complex physical / developmental / mental health issues.

Apparently it's only about 3% of children with special needs are deemed to qualify for an EHCP.
