Hi there, someone has suggested that we apply for an EHCP for our 17 year old so that her school will properly provide appropriate access arrangement for her to mitigate her dyslexia and her extremely slow processing. I spoke with the local authority and they seemed surprised that we would apply for this although they said we could. I notice that SOSSEN say it is possible to do this. Has anyone got any experience of applying for an EHCP for these reasons? Please reply if you know anything as I am trying to get my head round this and any information you give me will be very useful I'm sure.

Be prepared to be turned down in the first instance. Unfortunately, a lot of LAs seem to be doing this routinely, then agree once you appeal.

Thank you for the tip.

Have you looked at JCQ assess arrangement regulations? It may help in understanding their criteria. Access arrangements are not written into Ehcps although having an EHCP may fulfil some of the criteria.
It will take 20 weeks to complete the EHCP process if it goes to plan.

Thank you HaveASay. That's interesting to know that the access arrangements are not actually written into EHCPs. Do you happen to know how I could see a sample EHCP? I would help me to know what they look like and how the criteria appear. Grateful for any ideas you might have.

Ehcps look different in each local authority. You may food an example on your local Family Information website otherwise youy can download a copy of the SEND Code of Practice where in section 6 ( I think... that may be wrong I'm not at home to check) it details what information should be in each section.

Thank you HaveASay. I’ll have a look. Much appreciated.

It is written in my son's EHCP that he is to have 50% extra time in examinations.

Haveasay · 22/08/2018 19:43

Access arrangements are applied according to JCQ regulations, which change... which is why they are not usually specifically written in to EHCPs although they are often referred to generally.

Haveasay · 22/08/2018 19:45

Sorry... pressed too soon. Access arrangements may well apply where there is not an EHCP if JCQ criteria is met.

We have extra time during and 25 % over the normal time limit in exams now as well as laptop use in class and exams, also 1:1 invigilation if needed, thanks to a JQA application for "reasonable Adjustments" No EHCP here. although I am seriously thinking about applying. School claim they can provide everything needed so wont support it :( Although there is Health and Social care aspects to an EHCP as well as Education!)
