How much should a 3 year old be drinking?

Can anyone help? Ds has Spina Bifida, and he seems to be on drinking strike at the moment. We catheterise twice a day, so urine infections are a constant source of concern (fingers crossed, none so far), and he can get constipated when he hasn't drunk much. He's up at the moment with stomach ache, and I know it's because he hasn't drunk enough. So how much should he be drinking? I know it's 2 litres for an adult, but he's quite a bit smaller than me!

sorry to ask an off topic question but you say you catheterise is that self catheterise (i ask as someone needs support on that)
I have always had trouble getting dd (cp) to drink. have you tried smoothies. Also i let her have squash(i know mn is a bit anti but if it is a choice between that and dehydration0

looking at this site, it would appear to be 1.3 litres per day inc food, with 0.9 litres from drinks

don't know how far catheterising would affect that minimum, so probably best to ask the GP/paediatrician

does milk count?

mummytosteven · 27/05/2007 22:36

It's not clear - it seems to count for babies (they seem to reckon that human milk is 87% water)

2shoes, yes, we self catheterise ds, we've been doing it since he was 6 months old. I've tried all those drinks, too, and ice lollies - I'm pretty much at the end of my tether!
Mummytoseven, thanks for looking that up for me, and we're seeing his paediatrician on wednesday, so I'll ask him then. We're just going to have to keep plugging away at it, I suppose. He's even stopped eating fruit lately, I'm sure he used to get some fluids from that. I'm hoping it's just a phase!

mum2seb - dd1 has severe gastric reflux and we struggled and battled to get her to drink. it's so hard. nothing helped. she hardly had any wet nappies. she finally got a gastrostomy, i felt guilty about it coming to this.

four months later it was like a big weight had been lifted off our shoulders.

she's 3 now and still has the gastrostomy. she does have the odd sips of drinks and we try to go without it but she doesn't do well.

i'm so happy that it's there. hopefully you won't have to go down this road but if you do it really isn't as bad as you may think.
