Just wanted to post an update on DD who is 2.8 years and only has about 6 words. We are still on the waiting list for PCIT (video therapy) but hoping to get a place in September/October.
However, I was starting to get twitchy about the passage of time and mentioned to my mum that we may have to try and get a private consultation. Basically, she talked to her good friend who volunteered her son - a qualified speech therapist- to come and visit us (we actually were at school together but a few years apart - only met for school plays and other events that involved showing off!)
He came this afternoon, spent 2 hours playing with DD and assessing her. By the time he left, she was already saying "bye bye" . To cut a long story short, she is NOT going to suddenly speak in sentences when she is three ( as so many people have assured me she will !), her speech is simply very delayed but he has given us lots of ways in which we can help her progress. He asked for no payment for this (we're going to send him a card and present anyway) and said that we could phone any time and he would offer advice.
I feel so happy and fired up to help DD with her speech and I just wanted to share this with people who have also offered me help and support.

What is video therapy? What a lovely man, its so good when someone can take the time to just come and see a child and make a decent assessment

Oh what a nice man (and aren't those - "blah blah balh talk at 3" comments really irritating- the thing is now you'll do loads of work with her to help her speech then when she does start speaking at 3 and a half everyone will say "see told you so!"

Whether he just got DD fired up too or whether its just the right time for her, we have had 6 new words since he visited! Perhaps I should get him to come and live with us for a while !
He suggested that as she seemed, from what I said, to have been a quiet baby, she may not have had as much physical mouth practice to actually form words and that is why she is having trouble (rather like an unfit person suddenly trying to run a marathon).
Must admit I cried whilst watching the Nursery programme last night - when they were refusing the little boy a biscuit because he wouldn't say "ta". Just really touched a raw nerve.
JimJams - my reassurance record breaker so far is the boy who didn't speak til seven (he just didn't want to apparently).

What a lovely thing for him to do for you and dd.

Yep, when ds1 started to say a few words after lots of SALT work the I-told-you-so's were all out in full force with "See! I said he'd probably just start talking when he's about 3!"
