Ok.
A friend of mine is a childminder and she has been asked to take on a chld with ADHD for a short time during the day.
Any advice/useful tips etc for her???

IMHE, I would say the same applies to children with ADHD as it does to those without. Off the top of my head (and this comes from teaching in mainstream & special schools rather than childminding):

  • Lots of different activities available all the time

  • Provide something to keep their hands occupied if that is an issue (sometimes playing with blutak helps people concentrate)

  • Plenty of time outdoors & chances to run around and exercise

  • Set firm but fair rules and be CONSISTENT - make sure the child knows & understands expectations for behaviour and that consequences are logical (e.g. related to behaviour) rather than just random punishments

  • Make sure parents are involved & are supportive

Umm, will keep thinking...

Addiss has a helpful information line. ADHD kids I know are full of fun but have no coping mechanisms for boredom or waiting, so need to be kept busy/ interested or they find something to do (juggling with cuttlery/ swordfighting with sticks/taking things apart!). They have quite high energy levels and poorer awareness of danger so need watching like a younger child. My Ds also has ASD traits so it is hard for me to separate the two, but he has poor impulse control and has an almost uncontrollable need to touch things, which needs chanelling in shops for instance(he needs to be actively involved eg counting out potatoes). There is a popular book by Christopher Green (not my favorite but it is a good introduction)and should be available from the library. Hope this helps.
