I’m desperate to help my little girl and so worried for her. She finds certain noises unbearable and physically attacks us. It’s getting so severe and impacting daily life for all of us.

No formal diagnosis but under assessment for other conditions.

Anyone experienced similar? I am trying to get more help. She is seeing OT and under Paed and whilst I appreciate the help, it’s nothing we haven’t already read up ourselves or tried, so far. xx

Earplugs
Ear defenders
Escape strategies

My diagnosis is hyperacusis (hypersensitive hearing), but I know only too well about being unbearable (although mine is mainly pitch and volume as opposed to specific sounds). Sensory integration or desensitisation therapy can help some people, it was a torturous waste of time for me - a lot of pain and no reward.

I have had to learn to manage my life, so that my hearing doesn't control me. My choices are to avoid if possible (eg.. no nightclubs because of volume), block (earplugs/defenders/both) or escape (I nearly always have an exit strategy). White noise or background noise can also help with misophonia.

Bear in mind though that blocking out the noise can be very disorienting, incredibly isolating and quite scary (you do get used to it, but it takes time).
