ASD and walking on tip toes?

Hi,

Does anyone know the reason why children with ASD often walk on tiptoes? I know I have read something about it before, but cannot find it now.

Thanks in advance!

According to this:
www.autism.org/toewalk.html
it's visual/vestibular. I'd figured it was something sensory but didn't know what exactly.

Hi scoobyww

I think it is something to do with feeling pressure, on the balls of their feet.

Im sure somebody will come along and correct me if im wrong.

Thanks to both of you.

Anyone else?

Toewalking can be caused by very mild brain damage. (Although many toewalking children are neurologically typical and their toe walking is caused by orthopedic problems)

Toe walking is often linked to mild cerabel palsy. I guess that brain damage which makes the walking gait odd might cause autism as well.

Are you concerned about your child?

Thanks guys.

Frances... I am currently working with a child who does this and was asked 'why' does the child do it? I can answer most questions about sensory issues and ASD (have a DS2 with ASD)but was completely stumped with this one! I know I have read about it somewhere..just darned if I can find it again when I want it!

My son also walks on tiptoes and he has low functioning Autism.

my son also walks on his toes. I think it is something to do with stimulation, them finding a comfort/pleasure in this, like some children on the ASD like spinning, or hand flapping /(when in distress), again my son does the latter.

Interesting that it could also be due to mild brain damage.

My DS and DD1 both walk on their toes, but they have Cerebral palsy, and their ankle muscles are tight, which causes the toe walking
