DS started putting words together and became 'more understandable' at about 3 and a quarter.
His speech at that age would've been comparible to my DD's speech at about 2.

Hieveryone18 · 15/04/2018 14:19

Lauryloo and pandyandy1 did you have speech therapy and at what age did you start?

My DS was referred for Speech and Language Therapy at about 2 and a half. Initially he received weekly play based therapy, for about 8 weeks if I rember correctly, and then the therapist visited sporadically and gave DS' Nursery targets.

Hieveryone18 · 15/04/2018 21:04

And that was enough? I’m hoping nursery will help too

My son wasn't talking at 2. We went to speech and language therapy at 3. He was talking partially by 4 then more when he went to school. He was fluent and a chatterbox by 6. It was all very concerning and a worry but speech and language therapy is very good. It was advice like not talking for him and giving him space to breathe and speak. Waiting for him to ask for what he wanted instead of just handing over stuff. He was diagnosed as autistic at 2.

Hieveryone18 · 16/04/2018 08:15

Oh I’m glad he has turned into a chatterbox now, I would love that. Thank you for the advice. Does he chat to adults and children now? How’s he getting now?

He is quite confident and talks to everyone. It took a while to get up to speed and I was upset about how I failed him but the speech and language. Have a nephew who is going through the same thing (also autistic and we seem to have autism in the family) and once they started school with speech and language therapy that helped too. I hope it goes well for you

Hieveryone18 · 16/04/2018 10:55

Thank you bumbleboots, It seems like you have done so well for him. Why did you think you had failed him? He sounds fabulous. I think we are all just looking at what we can do for the best. I would love to start speech therapy now, but will a child listen at 16 months

talking odd words aged three but not fluent until 4+, now we can' shut him up - talks constantly! (He is HF ASD) The speech therapist who saw him aged 3 said that he fully understood everything you were saying to him and to be patient and it would come.

Hieveryone18 · 16/04/2018 14:50

Oh that’s great Vickibee, do you think he’s understanding came as the years went by? Also sorry but what does HF mean?

Hard to be patient when you want so much for them. Was that private speech therapy? How often did you see them? Thank you

'And was that enough?'...

Well my DS is now 5.4 and he has a diagnosis of Autism. His speech is still immature for his age and his last Reception report said that the 'Communication' EYFS goal wasn't yet met, BUT as a family we can now understand everything he says and understanding of language has vastly improved.

Hf is high functioning, he is extremely bright but struggles socially and emotionally. He misses the point of certain conversations and talks mainly about his own interests with little reciprocal conversation. He has ‘learned responses’ to certain questions because he is not in touch with his feelings or emotions.
It was nhs speech therapist and only saw her twice.
