Hi, my son is 12 & in year 8. He has hyper mobility and his handwriting & spelling is very poor. We've has concerns that he is also showing signs of dyslexia for some time. His school completed the screening recently and the report concluded that he has a few signs of dyslexia. His lucid spelling is below-low average, single word spelling is below average, reading speed low average, naming speed (picture) is deficient, processing speed cluster is deficient and all other areas are either average or above average. The recommended next steps are for his progress to be monitored at school.

I'm unsure if we should pay to have a more detailed private assessment completed and what the benefits are. If anyone could offer advice I'd be most grateful!

It sounds like you're in an awkward position with him struggling but not "bad enough" for the likes of EHCP. Certainly an ed psyc report would give you much more in depth info along with good strategies. (Of the school is open to using them!) They may offer suggestions such as assistive tech or particular typing fonts etc. If his writing is poor the way forward may be keyboard based anyway?

Thanks for your reply and apologies it took me so long to reply. The school are open to an Ed Psych report so we're considering having one, but goodness me they are expensive!

Hi I'm sorry can I gatecrash? I'm going through a similar thing with my 8 year old daughter.
I feel like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall with the school, she's finally had the school screening ( after hard pestering from me) and it has been confirmed there is a high probability that she is dyslexic( the only thing she can write is her name, everything else is backwards or just very jumbled up)
She's not getting any extra support and is getting very upset and frustrated .
I'm pushing for a 'official ' assessment, and we are apparently waiting for an educational psychologist to come out but it's been months.
Any advice from where I can go from here?

I had my children assess quite young - at 6 years old. We had to pay and yes, it was horribly expensive. (circa £500 each.) Local authority here was not providing, at least at that stage, formal assessments.

Having said that we feel it was worth it because it allowed us to tailor the interventions much more accurately. My now 9 yo is reading at the right age - which even the ed psych has been surprised about. However, it is a bloody great big chunk of money to find. :(

That's good to hear about the price gate assessment, however I've heard that schools don't have to follow the reports? Is this true
