ADHD meds for ASD/ADHD

We are currently trialing medikinet xl for DS1 (6yrs). The Paed has started him on 20mg, which seems high to me, and it's not going great. It seems to take up to 1.5hrs to kick in and then it seems to work sometimes and not others. Admittedly it's only been 5 days, but life hasn't really improved. I would like to try different doses/meds but the Paed has been reluctant to diagnose ADHD (he is on the fence) largely due to school's scores for inattention and peer relations, both of which we believe to be significantly underplaying DS1's difficulties. Can anyone point me in the direction of respected medical literature which backs up the anecdotal evidence that the same child will react differently to different meds/doses even if they all have the same active ingredient. The Paed seems to think if one med doesn't work none of them will and vice versa.

Thanks, I have been following your thread. I didn't recall seeing any links to specific articles; though I know someone had done a lot of research I was hoping to piggyback on.

I'd say give it a month before deciding its not worked! (That is the rule of thumb in epilepsy, when trying any change to the child's life, and drugs in particular, in an attempt to improve seizure control - and only make one change at a time, otherwise its not possible to work out what the side effects are; or what change is doing what. Doctors are scientists after all.)

IIRC, DD started off on Concerta 18 mg and ended up on 54 mg a day, as an adult.

You prob have to give it a month. You could ask for different brand after this. Ds is on equasym xl - it has to be taken before breakfast and has a 30/70 release.

There is evidence if you Google of some kids not reacting well to extended release versions or stim may not work for your son or you may need a higher dose.

R u seeing side effects - appetite suppression, agressive, headaches, nausea
