Hi, i have a 4 yr old who is in the process of being assessed for sensory processing dysfucntion. If i get a diagnosis i wanted to try DLA claim (no harm) but i feel may be the condition does not warrant a claim. She needs constant supervision due to anxiety, phobias, meltdown, dangerous and aggressive behaviour. Any advice appreciated.

well the criteria for claiming is that the child needs more supervision than a typical child of the same age, so if you think that's true than fill the form in...... It doesn't aslk much about dx.

supervision??: more help I mean.

My first claim for my son (now 8) was before diagnosis (he has AS) but was successful after reconsideration. Many of his issues are as you describe your son's. It's definitely worth pursuing an application, because awards aren't granted solely on diagnosis but on the needs of the child additional to a typical child of the same age. Good luck!

You don't need a dx for DLA, just issues that make your child harder to care for than 'the average child'
So fill the form in with a bad day in mind. Like the 'can your child walk' section. If yes, explain why your child needs more help - might run off, scared of traffic, refuses to move. Dressing - needs more help than most 4 yo's. Going outside - always needs someone with her cos of anxiety/fear etc. Nighttime- needs help/wakes lots.
I got it for my son who has sensory integration disorder and Aspergers without any dx.
You then have to get someone 'proffesional' like a HV who know's about these issues to write a bit on the form.

As others have said, it's the amount of help a child needs which is the important issue. The dx itself isn't that important, although obviously any medical reports would be useful to add as evidence. Ds2 had no dx when I applied for DLA. He too had sensory difficulties and behavioural difficulties. He was awarded higher rate care.
