Bad news about DS's hip :(

Today DS and I went to GOS with my mum to be reassessed for his Botox injections. His legs are back to the same tightness they were before
he had the Botox last time but his left hip has tighten up a lot. They want to do Botox into his hip under a GA, I asked what would happen if he didn't have it done, and they said he would get worse, and he would required an operation.
I thought he would stay the same as he is now, mobile and active but they said he will get worse, I burst into tears, wasn't expecting
any of this today.
I don't want him to have the Botox into his hip, but what choice do we have??

Oh mieow . I'm sorry you have had such horrible news. Have they said why it hasn't worked?

suedonim · 27/07/2004 21:36

No experience at all of this, Mieow, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear your news.

They have never injected into his hips, just his legs and it worked well. The BOtox has wore off now and he is back to where he was a year ago, but his hip has tighten up a lot and they now want to inject there. With it having to be done under a GA I am very upset and worried as he has never been under before

Sorry to hear you've had this bad news, Mieow. When do you have to make a decision?

mieow · 27/07/2004 23:17

We have two weeks till he has the Botox in his legs and they will look at his hip again then and then we will have to make a decision

Hi Mieow, I don't understand why or the implications of this, just wanted to say sorry really.

I hate unexpected news- always the worst. do you know anyone who has had it done that you could talk to?

mieow, the anaesthetic required for a Botox injection into the hip muscles is very short and very light, so please don't worry. They can't do it under local like the calf injections, because the muscles are further in, and can be a little fiddly to locate. Unless there are other health problems, it would probably be done as a day case, and he would literally be under the anaesthetic for 15 minutes or so.

Mieow, I can understand that you are worried about a GA - it feels like such a big step when they have a 'proper operation', doesn't it? But DS has had 4 GA's, and although it made me cry every time, i can promise you that it is MUCH worse for the parents than the kids - who absolutely sail through it, and much less traumatic than you imagine in advance. They are really skilled at aneasthetising kids - esp at GOS. The aneasthetist will come round and check him, and talk with you before hand. Ask him/her what the procedure will be, can you DS sit on your lap while he 'goes under' and any otehr q's you want to ask etc. Then check what the procedure is for where you wait, and how they will call you. They will call you to be with him as soon as he starts to come round in recovery - he won't be separated form you and alone and scared, honest.
Good luck. XXXX
