As we have suspected for a while, ds has been diagnosed with ADHD. He's started medication and is doing really well.

His behaviour is generally not too bad, but he can be very difficult to manage at times!

Can anyone recommend any good books for parenting ADHD children? Just so we've got lots of techniques to try. We were offered a parenting course before diagnosis, but that was just a generic course and now he's been diagnosed nothing has been offered!

I'll follow up with school and school nurse to see if they have any ADHD specific courses too.

I am reading "The ADHD Book of Lists" by Sandra Rief atm. It's American, but has plenty of strategies for teachers and parents for children and teens. I have found it good so far.

Thank you.

Why are all the books American?! I ordered a couple- mindful parenting for ADHD and the survival guide for kids with ADHD (for ds). Both seem pretty good so far. I suspect I'll end up with a small library Grin.

How to ADHD on YouTube is very good.

Thank you, we'll check it out.

It was like a lightbulb moment when we realised he was possibly ADHD but I have to admit I thought it was 'naughty' children and he's never in trouble at school.

A year later and he's just been diagnosed and the medicine is working wonders with his focus, frustration levels, anxiety and anger. We just want to make sure we do the right things at home to help him get along well.

Someone told me 1,2,3 magic was a good strategy book we are yet to buy it

starpatch · 31/12/2017 21:43

I bought it I stopped reading it when they suggested you should lock them in their room! I think I might get it again though it's much like the traffic light system they use in schools they get two warnings then a time out. So worth a look for that aspect.

Earslaps · 31/12/2017 23:08

Agree that 123magic wasn't for us. Focussed a lot on time outs, which ds found very distressing. I have taken on board the idea of warnings then 'moving down' on the behaviour chart. We have a chart like the school traffic light system (ds actually asked for a chart!) linked to a marble jar to earn rewards.

I have also read 'How to talk' many times and various other parenting books (more the positive parenting type than Supernanny style). I guess I'm hoping for something specific to ADHD so I can adjust my expectations accordingly- I'll never get ds to look at me when I'm talking for instance!

He was on 10mg equasym xl, a slow release tablet, but it meant no sleep until 11pm. So we switched to 5mg Tranquilyn, which is enough to get through the mornings at school when he actually needs focus! Afternoons tend to be arts, craft, computers etc. He's very slight (just 22kg) so needed the smallest dose possible.

That's good to know as time out and putting in her room would not work for us either!! Will follow as I would
Like some books too. First day of meds for us today hoping for a miracle as had a really miserable New Year's Eve and start to today!xx

Earslaps · 01/01/2018 22:38

Hope the first day went well. Our first day of meds was a nightmare (lying down tantrum at school Shock) but it was better after that.
