To be on the SEN register

Dear mums,

I am trying to figure out what is the best thing to do. My 5 year old son in Y1 has just been diagnosed with low muscle tone and hyper mobile joints and is seeing a private physio that is helping with that. At school he is the youngest but trying very hard and a TA is taking him out every day to do fine motor skills helping to strengthen his little hands, beyond that not much is happening. He is also seeing a Speech and Language therapist privately has he has low tone mouth but was dismissed by the NHS.

Now the school wants to put him on the Sen register and we are a bit taken aback by that. What are the long term implications of that? I know they are doing it for funding reasons, but I think that is going to stay on his record permanently and to be honest is not that we receive a huge amount of help from the school. The letter the head sent was quite quite blunt and a boiler plate letter that didn't really talk about anything to do with him.

Do you have any thoughts on that ? Please help

x

I'm interested as they want to take my dd off and I don't want them to.
I think it's a good thing to maybe get some help although has meant nothing for us as they refuse to put in strategies which is annoying !

The SEN register is just a list of how many SEN pupils a school has which is sent to the LA so the LA knows how many SEN pupils a school has. I'm not sure the school actually gets any extra funding based on the SEN register, they have a nominal SEN budget that they have to divide between all SEND pupils, but they do have to support children on the SEN register.

It's also not on their record permanently, they can be taken off or put on the SEN register at any time. My dd was on it yrs3-5, off yr6, and on again in yr7. secondary had no information passed on about dd ever having been on the SEN register I did notice the year she wasn't on it all support, which was minimal, (as in ELSA and Move to Learn) was pulled.

Thank you that is helpful! I am not under the impression that they are doing that much about it and i was just worried that my son would have that label should he need to change schools , as I believe they would pass that information on.
