Speech delay vs DLA

WhatHappenedToSunday · 06/12/2017 14:52

My daughter has Speech & Language Delay, and also Social, communication, interaction delay. Its quite significant.

AIBU to apply for DLA?
The form asks for nursery contact details, will they think I'm being OTT?
Is DLA needed for SEN funding?
Has anyone been awarded DLA for significant speech delay issues?
Dazed and confused by the whole process, aibu to even apply?

well, my child had significantly higher care needs than other 3 year olds. If she wouldn't, we would not have received high rate care after our appeal. But O should have been turned down when we applied nor on reconsideration. We had tons of reports. The refusal was systematic. They are trying their chance in the hope that parents don't fight back.

we applied at when she turned 3 and got it 9 months later. It got backdated though all to the day we applied. It just took so long to get it because of reconsideration and appeal. At no point did I supply extra evidence - it was all in application.

no worries.

We just send in renewal (DD is 10 now) and I hope they won't mess us around so much this time round. But at 10, she is light years away from her peers so it will hopefully be easier.

we had initially 2 years, then 5 years.

my friend with a DD with autism (awarded at 3) got it until 16 straight away. All rather random.

Fairylea · 12/12/2017 12:56

We were given high rate care for ds when he was aged 2. At that point he hadn’t even seen a paediatrician, only a gp who had referred him for asd assessment. He had no diagnosis. The initial award was 2 years. I filled the form in myself using the cerebra guide and writing very long answers explaining what life was like for us.

When we renewed at age 4 he was given high rare care and low rate mobility till 16. He has a diagnosis of autism, sensory processing disorder and dyspraxia now. He attends complex needs school.

I do think so much depends on how you fill the form in- so many people don’t put enough details in the responses.

Our area senco explained to me recently that sen funding at pre-school is based on a lack of progress, they assess termly and if no progress is made for a child already on an IEP (or whatever its called now) then they look at funding extra support which may be 1-1 or a specialist pre-school teacher etc

woodwaj · 29/12/2017 00:05

@dazedandconfusedx have you managed to have a go at the form? I've just paused at question 49 I'm shattered. Finding it relatively easy with the cerebra guide though so a big thanks for adding that tip.

I would imagine the setting is referring to the disability access fund. A one off annual payment of £615 per child per setting per tax year, for each child in the setting in receipt of DLA. The setting applies for it if you provide them with evidence of the DLA award and the setting receives the money to improve accessibility for the child.

Just thought I'd say they processed it really quickly. Was awarded middle rate! Thought it'd be low rate or nothing! Perhaps I under estimate how much I do to plug the gap. And just get on with it. Because objectively, on paper, they've looked at doctor's summary I had a copy of and just provided a description of routine activities and it's come back awarded middle rating. Perhaps it just landed on a kind desk.
Stays in place until 5th bday, so in total is £4k funding! £55 a week for 72 weeks.
Actually more because can inform tax credits of DLA and potentially get a supplement payment.

It will all go on speech therapy and help DC.

Good luck x

Great to read you've been successful.

curliegirlie · 17/01/2018 23:42

Excellent! When did you send off the application? I sent my daughter’s off last week - she’s nearly 2.5 and has Down’s Syndrome but doing really well and no real medical issues, so I’d been sitting on the form for most of the past year, thinking we’d be unlikely to get anything at that stage. Now It’s finally done I’m hugely intrigued to see what, if anything we get.

missadasmith · 18/01/2018 07:18

curly, we renewed DLA recently and it took 15 weeks to get a decision. if you just sent it off, it will be another 2-3 months.
