Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

What could this combination of things be symptoms of?

Just come back from Parents evening and I am a bit worried about 7yr ds - he's in yr 3 -teacher says he's bright and interested, loves going to school, is very sociable, well behaved, reads well....
but slow to write things, both for maths and English so slow that they have found it hard to assess him in some things. His writing has always been a weaker area but I think he is falling quite a bit behind now in writing - he's not on track to meet the year 3 expectations.... He also reverses quite a lot of his letters and numbers - the usual b, d p q but 5 3 6 9 too - school said that this isn't an issue until he's 7ish but now he's approaching 8 I think it would be good to see if there is something causing the problem.
Teacher said that she knows he is keen to make people proud and make it perfect so she doesn't think he's lazy but he'll write a word and then just sit and daydream....

I've always half wondered if there something he struggles with that I can't quite put my finger on but put it down to me being paranoid and over worrying about normal (if irritating!!) child behaviour...
Other things / symptoms that happen at home, but haven't been raised as issues in school are :

  • Flaps and waves his arms around, can't sit still, jumps on the spot doesn't just walk normally, usually always jumping in some way...
  • He witters a lot, repeating himself often and makes silly noises seemingly involuntarily
  • has trouble settling to sleep, doesn't mess around getting up and down at bedtime but can be awake
  • quite easily upset and emotional and worried about things, still scared of the dark and quick to panic.....

does it ring any bells???

Teacher said that she's going to speak to the SENCO and get her take on it to see if she thinks assessment is required but I'd like to try and get an idea of what he might be being assessed for.....

I'm a bit tired tonight so forgive the quick response but have you looked at ADHD, dysgraphia ?
Have a look at some of these things and see if makes any sense

We tried behavioural optometrist which helped ds. I'd look at dyslexia and dysgraphia

First get his hearing checked.

Then have a look at reputable sites for ASD, ADHD and Dyslexia and those on motor skill development.

Make a list of all symptoms he displays though don't try to guess or diagnose. Instead, write each symptom down and then give one but preferably two real life examples of that.

Then take him to the GP with your list which you hand to them, and ask for a referral to a developmental paediatrician to investigate.

hi OP I also have a 7 yo in y3 who is displaying very similar behaviours to yours while at home (repetition, mouth noises, squealing, running jumping diving spinning, talks at shouting volume, easily upset & angry), however he's having no issues at school whatsoever so I'm left on the fence wondering if there is something to be concerned about or if we just need some new parenting strategies Blush.

I think if your ds is struggling in both settings don't be afraid to seek some help - I hope you get some answers. I'd be interested to hear the outcome - it might encourage me to be brave enough to discuss our difficulties with his school.
