I generally use the sensory room at my local 1 o'clock club, but i was wondering if anyone knows of one on a larger scale? Would be great if we could spend a few hours somewhere as P takes a while to get used to them.

Are you anywhere near a SureStart Children's Centre? Some of them have sensory rooms which can be booked at really reasonable rates, if not for free.

Littlefish · 04/04/2007 21:11

Actually, some other Children's Centres have them too, not just the SureStart ones.

I'll have a look - thanks littlefish

Where in London are you? Most of the charities/play centres we use have sensory rooms. I expect they would rent them out reasonably for individual sessions. We are NW.

Have you tried local special schools? The one down the road from us has a sensory room which they don't always use and because we could be quite flexible on time, they let us use it for free once a week.

My friend is Headteacher of a nursery school in Reading which has a sensory room. Is that too far out for you?

Thanks for all the replies - sorry i didn't thank you sooner, we've been away.

P goes to school full time, so it's really just holiday use we need. I'll ask the schools nearby if they are open - hers is closed. We live in SW london - can travel for about an hour.

Children's Centres are open all year round.

We have a charity run project here in Horsham, West Sussex which has a sensory room, soft play room, garden & toy library. It is known as The Springboard Project, don't know if it is too far out for you or not. Open all year, plus they also run Saturday & holdiay activities for disabled/additional need children known as Grasshoppers.

Hi

One is planned here and is likely to happen as they have developed a lot in a short space of time and seem to have good funding

Hello!

My name is India, I am a third year student at Kingston University, London. I am researching for a project on Special Needs children, I have some experience caring for SN young people but only for short periods of time and they have mainly been Downs or Non Verbal Autistic. However my interest lies mainly in young people with cerebral palsy.

My research is specifically on interaction and play in the home environment. I will be designing fabric toys for use in sensory play, and need some advice and help from parents and carers. I'm sorry to interrupt this thread, but am looking for help! If anyone is interested in answering some questions and being part of the research it would be greatly appreciated, just message me and I will get right back to you.

Many thanks,
India

i was struggling to find a sensory room for my dd to use, her support worker told me that all day centres have large sensory rooms but they don't get used very often, i phoned our local day centre and asked, they let us use the sensory room twice a week, we just booked day and time, it was free at ours but sometimes they might make a small charge.
