DS4 with GDD is sleeping so much - a bit worried.

DS4 is 21 months now. He started crawling at beginning of Jan and is pretty active around the house now, crawling from room to room and pulling himself up onto his knees by the sofa and low table.

He sleeps a solid 12 hours every night (lucky me) waking at 7.30ish, he then naps from 9.30 - 12.00 and is often sleepy again in the afternoon, if I let him he will sleep for a further hour and a half (I have to wake him or he'd sleep more) in the afternoon and still be ready for bed by 7.30.

I guess the extra effort he needs to put into moving around makes him tired - is it normal for him to be so sleepy - if your child has/had similar SN were they often sleepy?

I suspect that he's napping so much because of the extra movement and also because his brain needs to comprehend and store all the new info he is learning and stuff he is experiencing.

My worry points would be if this a dramatic difference to his previous sleeping habits? If there are other changes like - nappy contents, behaviour, eating, temprement? Could he be teething too?

You could try to move his nap time so it's more central in the day - to reduce afternoon sleepiness. Just move it by 10 mins every other day till he goes down about 12:30.

I suppose it's not that dramatic a change considering he has become much more active over the last few months. His speech is developing too (gabbling)and he is starting to point and does a couple of signs. I guess all of this is exhausting him mentally too.
His temperment has changed a little but only because I feel he is becoming more frustrated.
Will try to change his nap time like you suggest - means we can do more in the mornings.

my son who has sn used to very very sleepy but gradually that has improved. I remember reading that its not unusual for children with sn to sleep more as there brains need more time to process information and soemthing they find the stimulation to much and therfore they sleep.

IF you are extra worried then of course mention it.
