First aid issues

Does anyone have the same issues with their DC, and hopefully some suggestions about how to give first aid to a child who is having a meltdown about the fact that they've hurt themselves?

DD (8) got some blisters whilst at the beach, and both DH and myself found ourselves having to physically restrain her to a) stop her from hurting herself further and b) to wash off the sand and put some plasters on.

We felt horrible, but she doesn't let us touch anything that hurts to put anything on, even though it has to be done. There is no reasoning with her when she gets into meltdown phase.

At home, it's easier to manage as we can deal with it slowly without the added pressure of onlookers thinking that either we're murdering our DD, or that she's very badly hurt.

Only thing I've ever found that works is distraction by iPad or phone.
And crossness Blush I'm not going to get a parenting award for this one, but with DS if I'm a bit cross and no-nonsense at those times then he seems to feel more secure. I don't think i can explain it in a way that makes sense.
