Worried about my Daughter

I am the pround mum of twin girls who are nearly 4. They were prem and have had various normal prem issues along the way - jaundice, reflux, late milestones etc but nothing mega. Last year they were referred to SALT and their speech has vastly improved however, one of my girls I think is starting to show some signs of ASD or something else and just wondered if anyone had any experience to share. They have both hand flapped for ages (When excited) but her sister has now stopped, her speech is ok but I tend to get one word answers out of her rather than sentences. Socially, she is lots less confident than her sister We went to a birthday party the other day and whilst she enjoyed it she was on the edge of the action all the time and was totally freaked out by the Paw Patrol mascot (mind you it was a bit odd!!!) She likes having friends over and playing with her twin but mainly parallel plays still- However, according to my MIL my husband was exactly like this too and he is NT. They both go to a school nursery and she loves going and is totally happy being left every day. She is also a good eater and sleeper and doesn't have any sensory issues in that regard.... I just can't put my finger on it but she just seems different. I'm an early years teacher by proffesion and have taught lots of kids with ASD and whilst I can see some similarities she doesn't have any of the routine based or sensory issues that I have seen in them and she is also fairly well behaved..her sister is the firey one! I have had issues in the past with her biting though but largely out of excitment rather than rage! I also wonder that if I just had her and wasn't comparing her to her ID sister that I wouldn't worry at all..aghhh! sorry just needed to get it all written down.

If you as a mum think that there is "something" then research says that there probably is. If you think ASD might fit the picture call your local Speech & Language service and describe some of the things you noticed and ask how to start a referral. If your local SL&T help out with the Social and Communication assessments they should be able to help advise on what to keep an eye on or allay your fears. I should say that for Asperger presentations it can be tricky to spot pre school. We were told "definitely no" by a paed at age 4 but then he was diagnosed at age 7..... keep an open mind and be prepared to have to gather evidence across multiple settings for a couple of years. Good luck
