Writing difficulties/Hypermobility

DS is 11, we have recently moved to the UK and he is due to start at a state grammar school in September. He is highly gifted but has been a reluctant writer since year 2.

Writing is average when he applies himself, usually for assessment tasks and tests, but below average for regular classwork. He hides and avoids writing tasks when he can get away with it without any direct confrontation. He tires easily and has pain in his hands during writing tasks. He has previously seen an OT who observed that he had hypermobility in his hands, but he scored in the average range on the OT handwriting assessments. I have no OT report but the hypermobility is easily observable (fingers and thumbs bending how they shouldn't).

Should I let the secondary school know? Will he be allowed to type for longer writing tasks without 'proof' of the hypermobility? Can I access an OT and get him reassessed on the NHS? If so, how would I go about this?

TIA

Our DS has an appointment with an OT re hypermobility. He has similar problems re writing speed and feeling tired and getting pain in his hand when he writes. I would get a report if possible. I just went to the GP about it and she referred us to the OTs.

Thanks :). Is a referral likely to be to see an OT at a public clinic? Or a subsidised private OT where we would still have to pay part of the cost? Has your DS been on a waiting list?
