Should my son get extra support from school

Hi. I'm a dad, so I hope it is ok to post here, but a friend told me mumsnet is the place to come for SEN advice. My wife and I feel like we don't know what we are doing, and my son is our oldest, so high school is a new things for us too.

My son is 11 and in year 7 at our local high school. He was diagnosed with dyslexia by an educational psychologist (independent) and with ADHD by CAMHS (in an different area from where we now live, but still England).

He seems to be doing ok at school. Second set out of four for maths - and school reports suggest he is fine, bar the needing to concentrate/focus/easily distracted/hard to get started on task.

CAMHS pretty much say that as he is medicated, those ADHD 'needs' are dealt with, and the school said their own testing of his reading and writing put him within their acceptable range (though the dyslexia diagnosis report by the psychologist showed he had really high scores for verbal reasoning, so the acceptable scores which are on the low average side aren't great I think).

Therefore he gets nothing in school by way of extra support. Teachers know about his ADHD and dyslexia and are less punative about things like chatting and losing focus, and he is allowed to type longer pieces of work in class, but beyond that nothing seems to be happening.

I think it is because he is 'doing ok'. However, I wonder what he would be capable of if he were given support for his difficulties? As I said, his dyslexia report suggested a very clever boy behind the average school attainment.

Am I being unrealistic in expecting more? Should he be on the school SEN register? If he is, we've not heard. If he was, would it actually mean anything? Does he actually have a 'disability' that the school need to make 'reasonable adjustments' for? (You can tell I've been doing some reading, can't you?)

I would really appreciate some views on firstly what to think, and secondly if there's anything we could/should be doing. Thanks in advance.

Hello again
I have a meeting with the school tomorrow, so would really appreciate it if anyone could give me their views on whether I am expecting too much? Should school be actively doing anything for my son, or should I relax as he seems to be doing fine at the moment (and is feeling fine too which is really important, as it hasn't always been the case!).
Thanks for your time.

I'm afraid I just stumbled on this thread and can't offer any specific advice - this SEN children section is normally quite active so it's a shame you've not had any responses - all I can suggest is that you also post in the Secondary Education section, as that's also quite active and you might get some responses from teachers as well as parents.

No expert here but in brief. Yes I think he should be on SEN register. Yes they are meant to provide reasonable adjustments to help him access the curriculum and learn to the best of his abilities.....that is the key. The best of HIS abilities. Not Joe Bloggs but him. Very bright children who are performing averagely are most probably not supported appropriately. This is very common from my understanding and as a parent you may well have a fight on your hand to get people to listen to you on this. I am at the other end of the timeline with a child due to start school next year so I am new to it all and I know others will be of more help and have been through all this already. Please also post on SN chat if you haven't already.

Thank you Ginmummy and Chasingmytail. I have posted in SN Chat now too.

I am not afraid of a fight as such to get what my son needs. I suppose I'm just not sure what is reasonable to expect school to do, so I want to know what I should be fighting hardest for.

I had a look online at EHC plans, but he would not qualify or need something of that magnitude, so we are left in a bit of limbo land.

Thank you for your input and good luck to you too.
