could this be dyslexia or dyspraxia?

DS3 is 6.5 and in year 1. He has a hearing impairment (glue ear) and is finally getting hearing aids next month after a long wait. He has hypermobility and asthma.

His development check just before school showed that he was meeting all his milestones and he was ahead in some areas. He was keen to start school and settled in really well. He loved reception although he struggled with using scissors and he was writing quite slowly. He is left handed.

In year 1 he has been struggling with his hand writing and writing speed. He keeps getting into trouble with the teacher for not writing fast enough or sitting doing nothing when he is supposed to be writing. I asked him about it and he said he was thinking about what to write. He doesn't like year 1, says it's boring and that he wants to go back to reception where it's more fun. He likes to suck his fingers and he pulls out a strand of his hair, or picks some of the floor and rubs it on his face while he's sat on the carpet at school. He does this at home too but mostly when he's in bed or watching tv. I just accept it as something he does, as long as he doesn't pull anyone else's hair out (maybe that's wrong) but the teacher doesn't like it and keeps telling us to make him stop.

He likes reading and can do it well, although he much prefers his own books to the school ones. I've been encouraging him by making homework into a game, testing his spellings with his brothers like quiz programmes on tv etc and he likes that.

I'm wondering if it's just his hearing that's causing him problems at school or if it's something else. I have dyspraxia and he seems similar to me when I was at school although he is better at and enjoys sports more than I did.

The teacher comes out to talk to me or dh most days to complain about his handwriting, general working speed and finger sucking/hair rubbing but I don't know what to do. I've got him to the point where he is happy to do his homework (with a lot of hard work and imagination from me) but I don't know how I can help him in school.

Have you looked up dysgraphia?

Thankyou. I've not heard of dysgraphia, I'll look it up.
