Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Has anyone had potty training success with a child that poo's up to 16 x a day? Feeling depressed.

My ds will be 3 in September and is under the care of a community paediatrician, SALT, learning disabilities team and continence nurse. He has global developmental delay and suspected ASD (going to panel this year. In addition to this he was in hospital for 6 months last year with acute myeloid leukaemia and had 4 rounds of high dose chemo. Since being in hospital he poo's multiple (generally 8 times a day but up to 16 times). I have been doing a poo, wee, fluid and food intake diary for the last 2 weeks for the continence nurse and it's really depressed me! I think part of the poo'ing problem is psychological as he won't release a full poo just small amounts regularly (most likely due to being so sore with severe mucusitis from chemo in hospital. I know potty training with children with communication problems and learning delay is a challenge anyway but I just can't see how we are ever going to get anywhere until this multiple poo'ing is resolved and I'm not sure how we can resolve it. I know being toilet trained is so important for dignity etc and I would like him to be toilet trained for pre school or at least school.
This is one of many problems and challenges we are facing with him at the moment but it's the one that worries me the most.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom or advice?

Oh goodness, he's been through so much, I hope he's recovering well Flowers

I think hes still quite young and I would wait until there are clear signs he's ready rather than setting a target.

Have you beer advised to apply for an EHCP (or equivalent)?

Thank you for replying polter. He really has had a lot to deal with but he's doing well and is in remission now. He is a little trooper and a very determined one!
He has a 'Team around the child'and I think an early years help plan/action plan at nursery. I think the HV initiated a EHCP and that will passed over to nursery. We have applied for DLA but still waiting to hear.
