My little boy is five in August he has been delayed within his speech for sometime now , he has had his hearing checked which was negative and he has been seeing speech therapy since he was two he has come on a long way with his speech he is in reception one of the youngest in his year as he isn't five till the six weeks holidays , he also in the PST eight months to a year started vomiting large amounts after eating , no pattern to what he is eating that could cause it and he has a been tested for h pylori , most recently he vomits when he eats in public like a restaurant or cafe to the point now he point blank refuses to eat out in public , prior to this he would eat his food then go white and projectile vomit within minuets of finishing his food, now he just won't go !! , he also vomits randomly in the house after food also , he has been off school quite a bit because of this , again this morning prior to going to school he has vomited he seems very anxious I don't know if this is causing the vomiting or not , once he is sick or not facing the stressful situation he seems fine again, he sees the schools special needs teacher throughout the week for one to one to help with his speech and he seems to work better in smaller groups his class has 35 in so often works in a smaller group to help him , has anyone else faced this when I go to the doctors they just look at me as if I'm stupid x

Do you think this could be anxiety based?

user1494838646 · 22/05/2017 10:36

I am not sure I am Starting to
Think so I just don't know why he is getting anxious and then why other times he is sick can be the start of the weekend or late evening when is he in the house x

That sounds awful - your poor little boy! I assume he has been checked for reflux? I am amazed the doctor isn't doing more to find out what's wrong. Can you get a second opinion? Anxiety is obviously a possibility, but I would want to rule out a physical cause first!

I think I would be speaking to my Gp and asking for a paediatric referral. They can then signpost to other areas if required. There is a reason this is happening and if the Gp can't help then push him to refer you on to someone who can help.

Flowers That sounds very hard for you and your DS. I agree that any physical underlying reason should be ruled out asap.

However:

My DS has anxiety-induced vomiting (he's 8 and has ASD). Is not sensory based (e.g. for some children the texture of foods can cause them to vomit) - for DS it's definitely anxiety.
Last spring / summer was the worst he was waking at 4am every morning and being sick until dawn. I was very worried it was a symptom of something more serious.
However, as soon as the summer holidays started he stopped, so it was definitely related to school anxiety.

He also struggles massively eating in public as he hates 'eating with an audience' (his words). He only eats at school twice a week (he's part time) and when he does he can only cope in a classroom with his TA.

It's also caused a huge phobia of sickness for him which is like a viscous circle - he worries he'll be sick so he then then feels sick.

I absolutely think you need to go to the GP to be referred onwards - however, I suppose what i'm saying is anxiety induced sickness is not unheard of.

If it is that I haven't found much help out there! The only way we've found is by decreasing the stress in his life (which is mostly school related - as I say he's part time and has now got an EHCP). It has helped. But I generally have to sleep on his floor at night otherwise he gets too panicky and vomits.

He did manage to eat out recently so don't loose hope (it was a massive achievement for us). Staying calm and distraction are the key.
Also not forcing him to eat socially - sometimes if we go somewhere he eats before the restaurant at home and just has his iPad there instead. Yes, it's different than for other families but it's what works for us.

(Sorry my posts are never short and I often feel I go on too much about myself! But I know when I felt so alone with what was happening with DS it helped such a lot to know I wasn't the only one)

Yeah he hasn't been officially checked for reflux I get it very bad and told the doctor this as I take omeprazole the doctor said it's very unlikely and said it's probably a milk intolerance which he has never had a problem with ! I can't get another appointment till next week at the Gp so going to ask him to be refered on to a paediatrician I do think maybe he is scared to be sick in public now so avoiding eating out but that doesn't account for when he vomits at home , I have asked the school and they say he eats his meals fine at school he has been sick a few times at school but always very quickly and after lunch !! I know when I ask him what he has for lunch at school he always tells me cheese and crackers so I don't know if he is sticking to this because it doesn't make him sick, it so hard because he knows he is going to be sick and once he has vomited he settles down and he always says for instance Mam water rubs his belly then projectile vomits , I wonder if it's acid he feels coming up and can't describe it , he often wakes during the night with bad wind stomach also which I think might be related as it often takes hours for his stomach to settle when this happens , I just feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall with the Drs xx

It's such a lottery with doctors. My son was hospitalised with viral wheeze when he was two. He then had a Ventolin inhaler, but they wouldn't give us a repeat prescription. He had little energy, got breathless often, and needed Ventolin probably every three weeks or so. But the doctor wouldn't do anything, just said bring him back whenever he has an attack. One time I took him, I saw a different doctor. He was coughing when he walked in, she said "that's an asthma cough". Checked him over, gave us a prescription for Ventolin and a preventative inhaler. He's now a different boy - no Ventolin in months, running around like a loon, never breathless. If I hadn't had seen the second doctor, he would probably still be having bad attacks every few weeks, and no energy.

It really does sound like they need to check him out for reflux (they can insert a tube that check the pH levels
in the stomach for acid - I think!! Not an expert on it)

Def push for referral as it's clearly causing a lot of distress for your DS.

Have you ever looked up cyclic vomiting syndrome?
